Meet AGR Expert Gary Smay

Meet Gary Smay, an expert in Coating Technology, Fracture Diagnosis and Cord and Annealing Issues. Although recently semi-retired, Gary continues to share his 45 years of experience to the benefit of our technical staff. Gary recently returned from China following the presentation of a private training seminar on the “Advanced Testing and Fracture Diagnosis of Glass Bottles”. Gary obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania and his Master’s Degree in Polymer Science from Carnegie Mellon University. Besides China, Gary has conducted training in 35 different countries worldwide over the course of his career. He is next slated to teach in our open enrollment seminars offered in Krakow Poland and Munich Germany this Fall.

Two Historic Legacy Papers Now Available

Two historic “Legacy Papers” entitled “Discussion on ‘The Strength of Glass Containing Cracks’ ” and “The Time Factor in Testing Glassware” issued in the 1930s are being made available this week on our website.  Both include the writing of Dr. Frank Preston, founder of AGR in 1927 and demonstrate the earliest consideration of glass strength and static fatigue. In the 1920’s investigators worldwide were researching the meaning of glass strength. Dr. Frank Preston and his colleagues were among those who began searching for this value through experimentation to define glass strength.  In 1930, Dr. L. H. Milligan published the first paper which was followed by a discussion by Dr. Preston. In this paper, the various factors that affect glass strength were uncovered and discussed. In 1935, Dr.
