DID YOU KNOW...

Did you know that… during an impact, the magnitude of the contract stresses generated and potential for damage increases as the radius of impact object or the area contacted decreases?  This photo depicts a Percussion Cone in the form of a circular ring crack  that is extended into a conical fracture. It was caused by a hard, blunt object pressing into or impacting the glass surface under a perpendicular, direct force.  Want to learn more about advanced fracture diagnosis? Interview with 50 year glass industry veteran Phil Ross

Interview with 50 year glass industry veteran Phil Ross: Phil Ross has worked in the glass industry for over 50 years and is celebrating his 20th year with American Glass Research as a Seminar Instructor specializing in Batch and Furnace Operations and Stone Analysis.

Q 1: What would you say have been the most significant changes to Batch and Furnace operations in your 50 years in the industry?  The Glass industry has been around a long time and I’ve been in it for only small window.  Instrumentation, sensors and controls allowing us to gain more insight into the entire glass manufacturing process.  In the glass melting furnace, the application of mathematical and computer modeling is allowing us to better understand what is happening with combustion, heat transfer, and glass convection.
